Bleak Midwinter captures the intense cold that follows a heavy snowfall under a cloudless late afternoon sky — there is a little warm color in places, but not enough to keep you from shivering. The technique was taught by Duluth, Minnesota artist Cheng Khee Chee, with whom the artist had the privilege to study several times. The process uses crinkled rice paper soaked in water and mounted with paste glue to 300 lb cold pressed watercolor paper, creating unique textural characteristics when painted over with watercolor or sumi ink while damp.
