For many years a huge, ancient apple tree grew very close to the house at Bear Trail Garden — a storybook trunk estimated at well over one hundred years old. When the tree had to be cut due to age and disease, the trunk was made into a fountain that may last a few more decades. Every spring it produced beautiful, profuse pink blooms. The apples, however, were quite bad and very sour. The blossoms were worth capturing; the rotten apples, not so much.
