The Grandfather Mountain Profile Trail is one of the most challenging and spectacular day hikes in the High Country. Beginning at the Visitor Center on Highway 105 between Foscoe and Banner Elk, the trail winds through deep hardwood forest before climbing a strenuous but well-constructed boulder pathway to the ridge line. From the crest, Calloway Peak looms to the northeast — a reward for those who start early and come prepared. Conditions can change rapidly, and temperatures can drop dramatically in almost any season.
