This painting set out to capture two things: the dynamic movement and intense, jewel-like color of a spawning season brook trout, and the exquisite craftsmanship of the Warden's Worry streamer — tied by friend and fly-fishing historian Fred Klein of Pennsylvania, whose old world patterns are featured on Instagram at @GrizzlyKingFly. The background was painted first using a saturated wet approach taught by Cheng Khee Chee of Duluth, MN. Color was then lifted out for the trout and fly shapes and re-established as the paper dried — creating a visual interplay of muted versus pure color, abstraction versus detail, that gives this piece its unique energy.
